The Financial Services Industry is the Worst



Hey Reader,

If you're like most people, you immediately raise your guard when someone tells you they're a financial advisor. I mean, heck, so do I.

In those situations, I'm sure you think, "Here we go. They're about to try to sell me something."

It's unfortunate that something as important as money is associated with such a negative experience. I get it though. The industry hasn't done itself any favors, and a lot of the people who call themselves financial advisors are really glorified salespeople.

Even worse, if you do decide to work with an advisor, the industry is so riddled with jargon that it feels impossible to compare advisors or understand if they're actually helping you.

I operate my firm and collaborate with other advisors who are trying to provide the exact opposite experience, so sometimes I forget how confusing the industry can be for consumers.

Last week, someone asked me a question that reminded me how important it is to help investors compare different advisor service models and compensation structures. So, this week, I want to share one of my favorite and most helpful blog posts:

Important Money Reminder

Last week marked one year of my morning journaling habit to The Daily Stoic. Monday's excerpt was a great reminder we can all use.

Here's my interpretation: Money is great. It opens the door to experiences and opportunities we otherwise wouldn't have. But if you're sacrificing your freedom, character, or values to get it, you've defeated the purpose of having money. Remember that the monetary cost of something is usually the lowest price we pay.
